Dear Friend and Supporter of Italian Heritage,
The October Italian Heritage Month Committee of Massachusetts, in partnership with the Consulate General of Italy in Boston, is proud to continue celebrating Italian creativity through a dynamic series of high-impact events and initiatives.
These efforts aim to honor Italian heritage while promoting education, innovation, scientific cooperation, the Italian language, and stronger ties between Italy and New England. The program will unfold over the coming months, beginning with the celebrations of Italian National Day with the event “Il Splendore” on June 1st and building toward a rich calendar of events culminating in October, the Italian Heritage Month.
The official Italian Heritage Month opening will take place with the traditional kickoff event in the historic setting in the House Chambers of the Massachusetts State House at 6pm on October 1, 2026. This special occasion will celebrate the Italian American creativity and spirit by honoring three distinguished Italian Americans: Frank DePasquale of DePasquale Ventures; Joe Campanelli President of Needham Bank, and Lino Pertile, Professor Emeritus at Harvard University.
The Italian Heritage Month program will also support several hallmark events, including the annual Columbus Day’s Breakfast at Dante Alighieri Cultural Center, and non-profit organizations, including the North End Historical Museum; charities; churches and schools in the North End.
The proceeds will also support the events organized by the Consulate General to promote the Italian Language (the “Italian Creativity Labs” engaging middle and high school students studying Italian) and the science cooperation, showcasing the leadership and innovation of the Italian and Italian American community across scientific fields (the STB, Science, Technology, and Business, Days).
The success of this ambitious and meaningful program depends on the generous contributions of donors and partners. Therefore the Italian Heritage Month Committee — under the auspicies of the Consulate General — is launching a fundraising campaign aimed at ensuring their success and long-term sustainability. The fundraising drive will culminate on September 21st with a special evening and celebration of 2026 Italian Heritage Creativity hosted by honoree Frank DePasquale in Boston’s North End.
We would be delighted to explore opportunities for your involvement through sponsorship and collaboration, building a partnership grounded in a shared commitment to cultural heritage and community impact. Thank you for your consideration, and we look forward to the possibility of working together.
Richard J. Vita
President Italian Heritage Month Committee
Dear Friends,
Following the great success of the Festival of Italian Creativity in 2024, we have seen firsthand how strong the interest is within the Italian and Italian-American community—and beyond—for initiatives that promote Italian culture, language, innovation, and scientific excellence in the United States.
These activities offer valuable opportunities for those who wish to strengthen their ties with Italy, as well as for those seeking to develop new connections with our country. Through moments of dialogue, exchange, and mutual discovery, they foster meaningful relationships and open the door to new and promising collaborations.
In this journey, the partnership between the Consulate General of Italy in Boston and the October Italian Heritage Month Committee (OIHM) has proven to be essential. Thanks to this close and fruitful cooperation, we were able to successfully implement an ambitious program of activities in 2024, including the Festival and the Gala of Italian Creativity, and to continue in 2025 with initiatives dedicated to the promotion of Italian language and culture—such as the Italian Creativity Labs—as well as scientific outreach programs, in particular the Science, Technology, and Business (STB) Days. These initiatives reflect Italy’s vibrant cultural heritage, innovative spirit, and strong commitment to education, research, and creativity.
In order to continue along this virtuous path and to further strengthen the ties between Italy and this dynamic region of the United States, we enthusiastically support the initiatives proposed by the OIHM Committee. Their dedication and vision play a fundamental role in ensuring the continuity and growth of these important programs.
We warmly invite you to join us in supporting these efforts and in contributing to the promotion of Italy’s culture, language, and excellence in New England, I look forward to seeing you at our National Day Celebration “Italian Splendore” on June 1st.

2026 Honorees
Italian Heritage Month Committee
2026 Excellence and Lifetime Achievement In Culinary Arts and Philanthropy Award
Honoree Frank DePasquale
Frank DePasquale is widely regarded as one of the most influential restaurateurs in Boston and a defining force behind the evolution of the North End. For decades, he has helped shape the identity of this historic neighborhood, guiding its transformation into one of the most celebrated dining destinations in the country while preserving the traditions that make it so distinct. His work reflects a deep respect for Italian heritage combined with a sharp understanding of how dining experiences continue to evolve.
At the core of DePasquale’s success is his belief that hospitality is about far more than food. His restaurants are built around the idea that dining should feel immersive, memorable, and rooted in emotion. This philosophy is evident across his portfolio, where each concept offers a unique perspective on Italian cuisine while maintaining a consistent standard of quality and atmosphere. Bricco, winner of many awards including the coveted Five Star Diamond Award, is well known for its espresso martini. This flagship restaurant is widely known for its elevated approach to Italian dining, combining refined dishes with a warm and polished environment that has made it a cornerstone of the North End for years.
One of the most exciting additions to DePasquale’s portfolio is Umbria, a concept that represents a bold expansion of his vision. With Umbria, winner of Certified Angus Beef Steakhouse of the Year, he introduces a refined Italian steakhouse experience that blends the richness of traditional Italian cuisine with the indulgence and sophistication of a modern steakhouse. The restaurant showcases premium cuts of meat alongside thoughtfully crafted Italian dishes, offering guests a unique combination that is not commonly found in the North End. The design, menu, and overall experience reflect a new level of ambition, positioning Umbria as both a continuation of his legacy and a step forward in redefining what Italian dining can look like in Boston.
DePasquale has also expanded his presence with concepts that highlight different regions and styles of Italian cuisine. Mare brings a coastal influence to the neighborhood, focusing on fresh seafood, oysters and house made pastas that reflect the flavors of Italy’s seaside regions.
The restaurant has become a destination for those seeking a lighter yet equally sophisticated dining experience, with an emphasis on freshness and simplicity. DePasquale’s first trattoria, Il Panino, offers a more traditional and intimate setting where classic Italian dishes are prepared with a focus on authenticity and comfort. Assaggio continues this approach, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that feels deeply connected to the Amalfi Coast cuisine.
DePasquale’s Quattro is a restaurant that has been recognized nationally as one of the top pizzerias in the United States. Recently reopening in mid-April, Aqua Pazza combines all the best dishes from all of DePasquale’s ventures, designed by Frank’s son, Joe. Dolce, with a whopping thirty-three flavors of tiramisu and many home-made gelatos, remains a fan-favorite in the North End, reflecting a true Italian cafe. Frank DePasquale’s crowning achievement aims to redefine the North End with an impressive new development complex on Cross Street between Hanover and Salem Street. Presently under construction, this development will be a beautiful, inviting gateway to the North End featuring a gorgeous restaurant including a large piazza with tables and umbrellas and other complimentary businesses for both locals and visitors to gather.
What distinguishes DePasquale is not just the quality of his restaurants, but the way he has approached the North End as a complete hospitality environment. His influence extends beyond individual dining rooms into the broader experience of the neighborhood itself. DePasquale’s other North End ventures include Bricco Panetteria, Bricco Salumeria and Pasta Shop and Bricco Suites, which is an authentic Italian pensione that includes twenty four luxury suites. By maintaining high standards across his concepts and investing in both aesthetic and operational excellence, he has helped elevate expectations for what guests can expect when they visit. His work has contributed to increased tourism, strengthened the local economy, and reinforced the North End’s reputation as a place where tradition and innovation exist side by side.
Equally important is his role as a leader and mentor within the hospitality industry. DePasquale has built teams that emphasize consistency, professionalism, and growth, giving many individuals the opportunity to develop long term careers in the restaurant world. His leadership style reflects both discipline and passion, ensuring that each of his establishments delivers a high level of service while maintaining the warmth and personality that define Italian hospitality.
Frank DePasquale has remained deeply committed to supporting the cultural and social fabric of the North End. Among a multitude of his impactful contributions in the North End, he has been an active supporter of the North End’s churches and schools and All Saints Way, the small yet striking outdoor shrine that honors Catholic saints and reflects the deep spiritual heritage of the neighborhood. He has also supported the preservation work of the North End Historical Museum, which is dedicated to protecting and documenting the rich history of Boston’s oldest residential community. DePasquale has made generous, impactful donations towards the development of the museum and has provided years of free use for its premises in order to continue its mission. Through partnerships with various non-profit organizations, DePasquale has substantially contributed to charitable initiatives that support local residents and families in need. In addition, he has long been a major organizer and supporter of one of the neighborhood’s beloved summer feasts, the Feast of Saint Gennaro. Through these efforts, DePasquale has demonstrated that his commitment and love for the North End extends far beyond business, reinforcing the neighborhood’s traditions while helping ensure that its cultural legacy continues for future generations.

At Harvard, he served as Master of Eliot House from 2000 to 2010 and later as Director of Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, from 2010 to 2015.

Professor Pertile’s publications reflect the breadth and seriousness of his intellectual work. In 1996, he co-edited with Peter Brand The Cambridge History of Italian Literature, an important reference work in the field. Beyond his publications, Professor Pertile has played an important role in strengthening the study of Italian culture between Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. His leadership at Villa I Tatti placed him at the center of one of the world’s leading institutions for Renaissance studies, while his teaching at Harvard helped introduce countless students to Dante, Petrarch, and the wider Italian literary tradition. His career reflects a rare combination of scholarly rigor, institutional service, and deep devotion to Italian language and culture.
